There is a lot of confusion in the media about this topic. Firstly, the darknet is sometimes confused with the deep web. The deep web refers to all parts of the internet which cannot be indexed by search engines, and so can't be found using Google searches. Expert estimates suggests that this deep web is hundreds of times larger than the 'surface web' (i.e. the internet you can get to from Google), leading to a certain amount of hysteria in some quarters. In fact the deep web includes large databases, libraries and members only websites which are not available to the general public. Most of the deep web is composed of academic resources maintained by universities, and contains nothing sinister whatsoever. Alternative search engines are available which are able to access parts of the deep web. One example of this which is aimed at the academic community is http://infomine.ucr.edu/.
